Elbphilharmonie Plaza: do you need a ticket, and is a guided tour worth it?
4 min read
The short answer. Yes, you need a ticket. Plaza tickets are timed, because only a limited number of people may be on the viewing platform at once, and according to the city’s tourism pages they have cost €5 since 5 October 2026, or €3 reduced (among others for children and young people from age 3, students and trainees). Children under 3 need no ticket, and concert tickets for the Grand Hall or Recital Hall get you onto the Plaza from two hours before the performance (Elbphilharmonie). The city’s page says tickets are sold online up to two months ahead and on site; the online shop is on the Elbphilharmonie website.
If you want a guide as well, the Elbphilharmonie Plaza guided tour with entry ticket is the more reviewed of the two tours: €20.70 per person, rated 4.7 from 1,957 reviews.
| Option | Format | From | Rating | Reviews |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Plaza guided tour with entry ticket | 1 hour on foot from Baumwall, German or English | €20.70 | 4.7 | 1,957 |
| Plaza guided tour with Störtebeker beer | 1 hour on foot, ends with a Hamburg beer, English or German | €29 | 4.6 | 246 |
What the Plaza is, and what it is not
The Plaza is a public viewing platform 37 metres above ground with a 360-degree view over the city and the harbour. It is open daily from 10 am to midnight (last admission 11:30 pm), closed on 24 December and open until 6 pm on 31 December, says the Elbphilharmonie. The two concert halls are separate: you only see them with a concert ticket or on one of the official house tours, which the city’s tourism page names as the only tours that include the halls.
That matters for the guided tours above. Both start at Baumwall U-Bahn station and walk you to the building, with stops at the Harbour Police Station No. 2 and the Mahatma-Gandhi-Brücke before the Plaza. The booking page for the first tour says plainly that concert halls are not visited, and that access to the Plaza is not guaranteed in rare security cases. It also says the tour lets you onto the Plaza without waiting. The beer tour’s booking page states that the Plaza tickets are included in its price and are valid only during the tour; the first tour has the entry ticket in its name.
Is a guide worth it?
The listings put the time on the Plaza at 20 minutes for the first tour and 35 for the beer tour. The walk from Baumwall is where the guide earns the price: construction delays, the building’s history and what it means for Hamburg, as the listings describe it. If you only want the view, buy the Plaza ticket yourself and skip the guide. If you like context, or want an English-speaking guide, the tours make sense. The harbour cruises are the other way to see the building, from the water.
Concert tickets
For a concert, buy on the official site only. Many concerts now have personalised tickets, and the Elbphilharmonie’s terms forbid reselling them on online marketplaces, so a ticket bought there can be refused at the door. Sale dates and channels differ by promoter, says the Elbphilharmonie, so check them on the event page. A concert ticket is also the way to see the Grand Hall without a tour.
Our recommendation
For most first-time visitors, the guided tour with entry ticket is the simple choice: meeting point, guide and Plaza access in one booking. Pick the beer version if you want a drink at the end. Go for the plain Plaza ticket if you have under an hour or just want the view. More options are in the Speicherstadt and Elbphilharmonie category.
