Hamburg Christmas markets 2026: Rathausmarkt, Santa Pauli and two guided walks
4 min read
The short answer. The market most visitors mean is the historic one on the Rathausmarkt, open from 23 November to 23 December 2026. The market on the Spielbudenplatz by the Reeperbahn, Santa Pauli, opens on 9 November and mixes a Christmas market with Reeperbahn nightlife, including strip shows on its stage from Thursday to Saturday. For a guide, two English-language walks start in the Old Town: the Christmas magic walk at €40 per person and the Christmas market and dark history walk at €25 per person.
The main markets and their dates
| Market | Where | 2026 dates |
|---|---|---|
| Historic Christmas market | Rathausmarkt | 23 November to 23 December |
| Santa Pauli | Spielbudenplatz, St. Pauli | 9 November to 23 December |
| WeißerZauber | Jungfernstieg | 18 November to 23 December |
| Candy Christmas | Überseeplatz, HafenCity | from 11 November to 9 January 2027 |
| Harburg Christmas market | Harburger Rathausplatz | until 28 December |
The dates come from the city’s tourism pages on hamburg.de and hamburg-tourism.de and from the operators’ own pages. The city lists many more markets across the districts, so this is only the selection a visitor is likely to reach.
Rathausmarkt
hamburg.de gives the opening hours as 11:00 to 21:00 daily. The market is operated by Roncalli. According to hamburg.de, a Father Christmas with sleigh and reindeer flies over the market daily at 16:00, 18:00 and 20:00, and according to Hamburg Tourism a Christmas parade runs along the nearby Mönckebergstraße at 14:00 and 17:00 on the four Advent Saturdays (28 November and 5, 12 and 19 December).
Santa Pauli
The operator lists Monday to Wednesday 16:00 to 23:00, Thursday until midnight, Friday until 01:00, Saturday 13:00 to 01:00 and Sunday 13:00 to 23:00; on 15 November it opens at 15:00, on 22 November at 17:00, and on 23 December it closes at 21:00. Entry is free. Strip shows take place on the main stage on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 21:30, 22:30 and 23:30; according to the operator, the separate strip tent of earlier years has been gone for several years. The market has no age limit, but some stalls sell erotic toys, and the operator advises keeping children away from the stage on those three days from 21:30. With small children, the Rathausmarkt is the easier choice.
Two guided walks compared
The Christmas magic walk lasts about 2 hours, takes up to 10 people, is offered in English and German, and visits seven Old Town markets. It starts at Franz&Friends at Glockengießerwall 8–10 by the main station, ends at the Rödingsmarkt underground station, and includes one mulled wine or non-alcoholic drink. Wheelchair access is only claimed by the provider in the listing, so ask the provider to confirm that the route works for you.
The Christmas market and dark history walk is in English only and starts outside the front entrance of the town hall. It passes the Rathausmarkt and St. Petri markets and tells stories of medieval Hamburg, the child bishop at St. Nikolai and winter floods near Deichstraße. It runs on selected dates from 26 November to 18 December 2026. The listing says it is not suitable for children under 10 and calls it suitable for older children who like spooky history. Food, drinks and purchases at the markets are not included, and there is no pickup or drop-off. The flying Santa depends on the market schedule, the listing says.
Both walks are new or have very few reviews so far, so there is little track record to go on. For the Christmas magic walk, the dates are in the booking calendar.
Our recommendation
Walk the Rathausmarkt on your own first. Book the Christmas magic walk if you want a guide who links several markets, and the dark history walk if you prefer stories to shopping. Santa Pauli pairs with our St. Pauli guide; more is in the city tours category.
