Food tours in Hamburg: Sternschanze, St. Pauli or St. Georg, and the fish market on your own
4 min read
The short answer. If you book one food tour, make it the Sternschanze food tour: three hours, five tastings, a guide in English or German, and a price per person of €49, rated 4.6/5 from 2,201 reviews. The St. Pauli and St. Georg tours are the same format in other districts, but their listed price is for a whole group of up to 10, which matters if you are two people.
| Tour | Area | Guide language | Price | Rating | Reviews |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sternschanze food tour | Schanzenviertel | English, German | €49 per person | 4.6 | 2,201 |
| St. Pauli food tour | St. Pauli, ends near the Reeperbahn | German, English | €500 per group of up to 10 | 4.6 | 236 |
| St. Georg food tour | St. Georg | German, English | €450 per group of up to 10 | 4.5 | 294 |

What the three culinary tours have in common
All three last three hours on foot, include five tastings at selected eateries and are led by a guide from the provider. The Sternschanze and St. Georg listings say the tour is suitable for vegetarians; the St. Pauli listing offers vegetarian alternatives at each stop and lists drinks of any kind as not included; the Sternschanze and St. Georg listings name only water, so plan to pay for any other drinks yourself. The St. Pauli and St. Georg listings both warn that you often visit small, traditional restaurants that do not take cards, so bring cash for any extra drink. Dress for the weather: the Sternschanze listing asks for weatherproof clothing and suitable footwear.
How they differ
- Sternschanze starts at Dänenweg 2 and covers the Schanzenviertel, which the listing describes as Hamburg’s alternative district, with its history, gentrification and the Rote Flora. The listing also notes that the main street is nicknamed the “Galao-Strich” because of the Portuguese immigrants of the 1970s.
- St. Pauli starts at Feldstraße and ends almost on the Reeperbahn, and the listing sets out to show the district beyond the party reputation. That makes it a natural first stop before a night out; our St. Pauli guide explains the other options there.
- St. Georg starts at Heidi-Kabel-Platz 1 and covers the district between the Alster and the main station. Its listing talks about the area’s history and its mix of people today, including Lange Reihe and Hansaplatz.
Both group-priced listings quote one price for a whole group of up to 10, so the fewer of you there are, the more each person pays.
The beer alternative
The Schanzenviertel food and beer tour lasts 2.5 hours and includes a visit to the Ratsherrn Brewery, beer samples and a currywurst. Its guide speaks German, it is not suitable for children under 18 or for people with mobility impairments, and the meeting point is the brewery at Lagerstraße 30A.
The fish market, free and on your own
Hamburg’s Sunday fish market is not something you book. According to the Altona district page on hamburg.de, it runs on Sundays from 5:00 to 9:30 until 14 November, and from 15 November to 14 March from 7:00 to 9:30. Go early if you want it, and plan a food tour for another day.
Our recommendation
Most visitors should pick the Sternschanze tour, which is priced per person and offered in English. Choose the St. Pauli tour for a group of friends who want to end near the Reeperbahn, and the beer tour only if you speak German and are 18 or older. More in the food tour category.
