Hamburg harbour at night: which evening lights cruise is worth booking?
4 min read
The short answer. If you do not speak German, the 1.5-hour evening harbour lights cruise is the pick: its listing says it runs every day and offers an audio app in English and other languages. It costs €34 per person, rated 4.3 from 5,184 reviews. The live commentary on every evening cruise below is in German.
| Cruise | Boat | Boarding | From | Rating | Reviews |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1.5-hour evening harbour lights cruise | Rainer Abicht, daily | Brücke 4 | €34 | 4.3 | 5,184 |
| 90-minute evening lights harbour cruise | Traditional barge, German only | Brücke 4 | €31 | 4.5 | 8,972 |
| 1.5-hour grand harbour evening lights cruise | Barge, Kapitän Prüsse | Brücke 3 | €24 | 4.2 | 1,535 |
| 1.5-hour evening lights cruise on a large ship | Large ship with bar, Kapitän Prüsse | Brücke 3 | €25 | 4.4 | 960 |
When they run
Because these are lights cruises, departure times depend on when it gets dark and shift with the season; the booking pages show the times for each date. The Abicht listing says its cruise runs every day; for the two Prüsse cruises, check the operating days in their booking calendars before you plan around them. All four listings show free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
What you see
The cruises that enter the Speicherstadt depend on the tide. The Abicht listing says the route is the ship master’s decision and that narrow waterways cannot be used at high and low water; the 90-minute barge cruise also makes the Speicherstadt depend on the tide. On the Abicht route the cruise starts in the Speicherstadt, according to its listing, passes HafenCity and the Elbphilharmonie, and returns past the container terminals and their illuminated cranes. For how the quarter looks by day and on foot, see our Speicherstadt guide.
The Prüsse large ship works differently: its listing names the container port, the fish market, the Elbe beach, Waltershof, HafenCity and the Elbphilharmonie, but not the Speicherstadt, so do not count on the canals. If the lit canals are the point, take a barge, whose listing names them. If you want a bar, a sun deck and a seat that is guaranteed, the large ship offers all three according to its listing, with drinks and snacks paid in cash.
Practical points
- Language. Live commentary is German on all four. The Abicht cruise has the audio app; the barge cruise from Brücke 4 says it is held exclusively in German.
- Mobility. The two Prüsse listings list wheelchair users as not suitable. The large-ship listing says strollers fit on board and dogs are allowed.
- Clothing. Both Prüsse listings suggest weather-appropriate clothing, and the large ship has an open deck.
- Other lights. The ATG Alster illumination cruise (€35) is a different route on the Alster for up to 19 people, not the harbour.

Our recommendation
Book the Rainer Abicht evening cruise if you want daily departures and English audio. The 90-minute barge cruise suits German speakers who want the Speicherstadt. Choose the large ship for a bar and seating. All options are in the harbour cruise category.
